When we consider how Jesus suffered for us, we usually reflect on how He was scourged and crucified at Calvary. But Jesus’ suffering actually began in the Garden of Gethsemane.

At the Last Supper He established how the Church is to celebrate His sacrifice. He presented His body as the bread and His blood as the wine. The first celebration of communion has been passed on to every generation. What Jesus did that evening, we continue to celebrate in remembrance of Him to this day.

It was in the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus anguished over His decision to go to the cross. Jesus’ choice to be our sin offering reflects Jesus’ great love for His Father and for us.

When Jesus decided to become our sin offering and chose the Father’s will over His own will, He received strength from His Father to face the horrific sufferings of the cross with the unshakeable faith and courage. The anguish and terror He had experienced were replaced by a new strength and boldness. Christ’s victory at Calvary really began in the Garden of Gethsemane.

As we familiarize ourselves with Jesus’ suffering in Gethsemane, we will experience a deeper revelation of His great love for us.
